JOB SUMMARY:          The Medical Laboratory Technician will obtain patient specimens, perform all Lab functions, interpret test results, implement quality control procedures, and perform instrument/equipment maintenance.

ESSENTIAL TASKS/DUTIES: (This list is a succinct summary of core duties only. Other tasks will be assigned)

  1. Conduct chemical analyses of body fluids, such as blood or urine, using a microscope or automatic analyzer to detect abnormalities or diseases and enter findings into computer.
  2. Analyze the results of tests or experiments to ensure conformity to specifications, using special mechanical or electrical devices.
  3. Set up, maintain, calibrate, clean, and test sterility of medical laboratory equipment.
  4. Prepare standard volumetric solutions or reagents to be combined with samples, following standardized formulas or experimental procedures.
  5. Collect blood or tissue samples from patients, observing principles of asepsis to obtain blood sample.
  6. Conduct blood tests for transfusion purposes and perform blood counts.
  7. Examine cells stained with dye to locate abnormalities.
  8. Analyze and record test data to issue reports that use charts, graphs, or narratives.
  9. Draws and processes patient samples.
  10. Runs all tests, to include CBC’s, Chemistries, Kit tests, Coagulation tests, Urinalyses, and Blood Bank.
  11. Processes and properly distributes reports.
  12. Implements quality control procedures.
  13. Engages in troubleshooting techniques when needed.
  14. Phlebotomy duties included.
  15. Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Certification:

  1. Must have an Associate degree in Science.
  2. Must have and maintain registration as an MLT, ASCP or equivalent and/or
  3. Must be qualified according to CLIA guidelines.
  4. Must demonstrate the ability and willingness to learn and apply technical procedures involved in Laboratory testing.
  5. Must be able to stand, walk, and reach with hands and arms and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
